I have seen several comments that claim that I am here to “sell”. Frankly if it was that easy, why are other manufacturers not here to “sell” their products? I believe that people are much smarter than to fall for it.
For years I have been participating in all kinds of forums in order to listen, learn and contribute; but also to explain who we are and to correct misconceptions.
Allow me to share something personal.
When I started my business 27 years ago, I was a struggling musician and engineering student who simply could not afford to buy equipment for my own studio. I played in piano bars, coffee shops and on stage in order to make a living. And I soon realized that my friends had exactly the same problem as they couldn’t afford good equipment. So I started building products in my living room and selling it to my friends at a very reasonable price - and the rest is history. Today we are company with around 4,000 amazing people, who take immense pride in what they are doing.
My father was a nuclear physicist and church organ player who was mad enough to build a 1000 pipe organ in the loft of our house. He designed the first electronically controlled pipe organ for which he earned several patents. As a boy I would watch over his shoulder, which inspired me to later build my first synthesizer at the age of 16. I believe it was this experience that sparked off my passion for music and electronics to had me pursue a career in this wonderful industry.
I truly believe that “passion is the essence of life” and rich are the people who pursue what they love in life - no matter if you collect stamps or watch the stars. People who have become successful in life, were never driven by money but an insatiable passion for what they love. Only this very engine will drive you through hardship when things get tough - and for the people among you who run a business, you know what I am talking about.
I am a tremendous admirer of Ikaturo Kakehashi, the founder of Roland, who not only pioneered our industry, but who also went through incredible personal hardship all through his life. After reading his book “My Life for Music” which I highly recommend, I was so inspired that I made an effort to meet him. Luckily he was gracious enough to make time for me. I tip my hat for this man.
People around me know that I am not driven my money or any materialistic things. I consider myself a minimalist as all I have at home is a grand piano, a couch and my valuable books. As an avid reader, much of my knowledge comes from reading and learning from people that are much smarter than me. For me, learning is an incredibly motivator as it leads to self-awareness and self-improvement.
I believe I got this from my wise mother, who at the age of 60 went back to university and studied for a second time, just to graduate at the age of 65. Now at 86 she travels to China, walks the factory to ask me a thousand questions and to shake people’s hands.
Find something that you love in life, that deeply fulfills you, then you will be good at it, and success will come automatically.
Like many of you, I love synthesizers and other musical instruments - nothing is more inspiring than to make or listen to music. And yes we hope to sell lots of DeepMind12 synthesizers, so we can hire more people and design more innovative products that enrich people’s lives.
That’s as simple as it is.

Quelle: https://www.gearslutz.com/board/12058767-post4221.htmlIn terms of pricing we are at the final stage of announcing it. There is a clear reason why this has taken much longer time – a delay for which I apologize.
As I explained earlier, in contrast to most other companies, we calculate the sales price of our products through a "Bottom Up" approach. Instead of looking at the competition and figuring out what the customer would be willing to pay for a product, we calculate our manufacturing cost and add a slim margin on top which we need to run our company as well as make future investments in people and infrastructure. Naturally any cost increase in the "Bottom Up" approach will subsequently translate into a higher cost for the customer; on the other hand, high volume production will lower component and manufacturing cost - something we like to pass on to the customer.
The sales price of the DeepMind12 heavily depends on the expected sales volume, and since the feedback has been overwhelmingly higher than what we had ever anticipated, we decided to renegotiate all component prices with our vendors in order to get higher discounts. At the same time we are studying how we can rearrange the manufacturing setup so we can achieve higher efficiency and volume
We also taking the time to gather data for the expected sales volume by engaging with our dealers and distributors.
This morning I learned that one of the largest retail chains in the US, is willing to place an order for 30,000 pcs. Frankly this is something I have never seen in the history of our company!
I hope you appreciate that we do this with one goal in mind, to lower the sales price as much we possibly can. I have decided to make the synthesizer as affordable as possible as I like to get it into the hands of many people.
Please give us some more days so we can complete the exercise and come back to you with the final price. Thank you for your patience.
Uli
