"Hi all,

It’s been a while! We’d like to share some updates on what we’ve been working on, when you can next expect releases of MASCHINE & KOMPLETE KONTROL, and what else is coming later this year.

The theme of this quarter (April - June) has been MASCHINE+ feature development, and compatibility / OS improvements for desktop software. You may have already seen the first beta for MASCHINE+ 1.3.0-522 that adds the Poly Synth, as well as various other improvements. I’m pleased to share that this will also be made available for MASCHINE desktop in a release planned for 1st July.

We are currently preparing beta builds which will be available very soon. Please note that this update has implications on backwards compatibility. Those using Builds (rather than running installers) will also need to replace ScanApp / ScanPluginsApp. See section ‘Maintenance’ for more information. The planned scope of this release is as follows:

Poly Synth (MASCHINE)
Poly Synth is a recreation of NI’s Pro-53 synthesiser, available as an internal plug-in (via plug-in dropdown) for MASCHINE.
It has been built with MASCHINE+ and hardware control in mind. All parameters are available from hardware (though the software interface is simpler). Poly Synth (as well as Bass Synth and Drum Synth) presets will be made available in a future update to the Factory Library (and will therefore be visible in the Browser).

Features:
  • Up to sixteen voices - The number of voices can be set in the section labeled VOICES
  • Two oscillators
  • Multimode Filter
  • Two envelope generators
  • One LFO
  • Modulation and Polymod sections

Improvements to the original Pro-53 synthesiser include:
  • Reworked Filter and Oscillator sections - Enabled [On] by default in the Global section labeled OSC VERSION (this mainly for testing purposes and should be left on)
  • Improved parameter smoothing (note: this was enabled in the Global section labeled FILTER VERSION for testing purposes, but has been disabled and will therefore have no effect):
    • Mod-wheel
    • Pitch-bend
    • Parameter knobs
  • New envelope trigger modes - available in the Voices section labeled MODE:
    • Poly
    • Unison
    • Unison with Legato
  • Increased pitch-bend range: the pitch-bend range can be set in the Global section labeled PITCHBEND

Multi-Selection of Clips (MASCHINE)
It is now possible to select multiple Clips simultaneously in software:
  • Multi-Selection of Clips is a new concept that sits on top of the existing Focus concept in MASCHINE. A focused Group (that contains at least one Clip) will always have exactly one focused Clip. Even if multiple clips are ‘selected’, only one Clip within the selection will be ‘focussed’, and this can be changed by clicking on another Clip.
  • This is currently a software-only feature, and thus a multi-selection made in software will not be reflected on the display of connected hardware. Interactions made on hardware will only affect the focussed clip, and not the multi-selection in software.
  • The full list of interactions will be published in an addendum to the manual.

MIDI Change
The MIDI Change feature is now available from MASCHINE MK3/MASCHINE+ hardware via the SETTINGS > MIDI tab. This is mainly intended to allow MASCHINE+ users to trigger Scene/Section/Snapshot changes from an external MIDI device.

Compatibility (KOMPLETE KONTROL & MASCHINE)
In addition to the above mentioned features for MASCHINE, we are also working to keep our products current with the constantly shifting OS and compatibility landscape. You can expect the following from the upcoming releases:

NI VST3 hosting
In the coming weeks, additional NI plug-ins (including Kontakt and various FX) will be released as VST3s. The subsequent releases of MASCHINE and KOMPLETE KONTROL will add compatibility with these VST3s, and loading a preset from the MAS / KK browser will also instantiate the corresponding VST3 plug-in (previously the VST2 would always be loaded). Please note: any VST2 hosted in existing instances of MAS / KK (i.e. in saved DAW / standalone projects) will not be migrated to the VST3 automatically. A beta build of Kontakt VST3 will also be made available.

Apple Silicon (Rosetta 2) Compatibility
KOMPLETE KONTROL and MASCHINE can now be used in Logic Pro on Apple Silicon machines when Rosetta 2 is installed. Please note: Logic integration from S-Series (MK1 & MK2), A-Series & M32 keyboards and MK3 controllers is only available when Logic is started in Rosetta mode (via right click menu > get info).

Maintenance
We have made some maintenance changes that affect file paths, and have an impact on backwards compatibility:
  1. In KOMPLETE KONTROL and MASCHINE preferences on macOS, file paths are now shown in the standard POSIX format instead of the old Mac HFS format (i.e. slashes instead of colons).
  2. Files created in MASCHINE 2.14 cannot be opened in an older version of MASCHINE due to unavoidable updates of third-party libraries. This applies to MASCHINE projects (mxprj), Groups (mxgrp), Sounds (mxsnd) and Presets (mxinst / mxfx). Please be mindful of this if you intend to revert back to MASCHINE 2.13, or have both 2.13 and 2.14 on your system.
  3. For macOS users wishing to revert to previously released versions of KOMPLETE KONTROL and MASCHINE, please delete komplete.db3 before launching either application. Failure to do so will result in duplicated user presets (appearing in both the old and new format). Komplete.db3 can be found in /Users/user name/Library/Application Support/Native Instruments/Komplete Kontrol
  4. If you are running Builds (rather than using the Update Installer), please copy ScanApp / ScanPluginsApp_x64 from the downloaded folder into /Library/Application Support/Native Instruments/Komplete Kontrol / C:\Program Files\Common Files\Native Instruments\Komplete Kontrol\

Bug fixes
FIXED Audio crackles when sampling (introduced in MASCHINE 2.13)
FIXED Clunky scrolling when using a MacBook trackpad
FIXED Super 8 missing background image on controllers

Known issues
Plug-in parameters not copied when pasting VST3 plug-ins in MASCHINE
Ableton Live 11 integration scripts are not yet part of installers
Knobs in KOMPLETE KONTROL and MASCHINE do not respond when Waves plug-ins are loaded (note: Waves are aware of the bug and the fix is with them)

A note on the Future
Finally, we’d like to share some information on what else to expect for later in the year. We are continuing to work on compatibility with Apple Silicon machines, and future releases will add compatibility by plug-in target, and eventually remove the need to have Rosetta 2 installed.

We will also continue with VST3 plug-in targets for KOMPLETE KONTROL and MASCHINE, and open the hosting of VST3 plug-ins to all vendors (this is currently restricted to NI plug-ins only).

Finally, we’d like to share a brief reminder that at all times, we are simultaneously maintaining our released products, whilst also investing into our tech stack and in some cases a future generation of products. Whilst there is nothing specific to share yet, please be assured that exciting things are on the long term horizon.

Best,
The Music Production Team"
