In the back of my mind there was that fear: What if people end up just sounding like me? But as we started sending the machine out to friends or people whose music we like—Caterina Barbieri, Ben Frost, Rob Lowe from Lichens, Daniel Avery, Julianna Barwick—we realized that what came out of them was completely different from what I was doing with it. Ben Frost sent some stuff done just on the Strega and it sounded like a different version of Ben, which is what we were shooting for.
It’s not a pretentious machine. I’m not saying that it’ll change the way you make music. But if you sit in front of it with headphones, whether you’re a musician or not, it will provide that emotional chamomile, in a way. It’s a calming instrument. That’s what I designed it for: to make the search for that calmness that comes from making music quicker. Every time I sit in front of it, I learn something new. And it’s saved me a lot of money in therapy."
