At first I thought that Clavia had built a pitch shifting circuit in the
NL3. So, I connected the NL3 to a scope and looked what happened to a simple
pulse wave. But 'pitch-shifted' pulses should be of a continuous lower or
higher frequency and there would probably be some slight amplitude
modulation due to masking. But the shifted pulses were simply only going up
and down in frequency, so no pitch shifter but probably a simple low
frequency FM by using a delay line.
Still the NL3 Unison sounds very full and smooth and not at all like the NM
chorus. Its a quiet but spacious modulation which I happen to like very
much. This reminded me of a four-phase chorus effect I have in my Digitech
TSR24s, and yes, that one sounds a lot like the NL3 Unison.
Adding all up I figured something like what I use in the 'Ana'-patches
should happen, and yes, although there is definitely some difference to the
NL3 probably due to length of delay lines or the LFO waveform, it comes
quite close. In fact I suspect the delaytime in the NL3 to be 5.8 msec,
slightly longer than two delay lines in the NM.
