Irgendwie vermisse ich ja diesen Thread noch. Als starte ich ihn einfach selber. Bevor ich hier selber anfange rumzudefinieren was "Dark Ambient" ist, zitiere ich lieber die englische Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_ambient)...

Dark ambient (in the 1980s also referred to as ambient industrial) is a genre of post-industrial music that features foreboding, ominous, or discordant overtones, some of which were heavily inspired by elements of ambient music. The term was coined in the early 1990s by Roger Karmanik to describe the music of Raison d'être and is strongly associated with the Cold Meat Industry record label.

Dark ambient often consists of evolving dissonant harmonies of drones and resonances, low frequency rumbles and machine noises, sometimes supplemented by gongs, percussive rhythms, bullroarers, distorted voices and other found sounds, often processed to the point where the original sample cannot be recognized. For example, entire works may be based on radio telescope recordings (Arecibo Trans-Plutonian Transmissions), the babbling of newborn babies (Nocturnal Emissions Mouths of Babes), or sounds recorded through contact microphones on telegraph wires (e.g. Alan Lamb's Primal Image).

Generally the music tends to evoke a feeling of solitude, melancholy, confinement, and isolation.

Dark ambient is like a marriage between ambient and industrial. Is naturally dark and much more interesting than regular ambient. Doesn't feature any cheesy synths, unless made by an ex black metal musician (that oftenly makes people bitch about whether the music is dark ambient or not; it usually is not). Usually doesn't feature any guitars. On those rare cases when it does (like in drone doom), it's definitely non-conventional use.

Much influenced by "musique concrete", dark ambient features recorded sounds, oftenly of non-musical nature.
Dark ambient can have various esthetics. Moaning and chanting, chain rattling (no, that's no ghost) raison d'etre-like stuff, radioactive droning of Fallout soundtrack, heavy pounding sounds of mechanisms, crazy shamanic drum-machine sounds, abrasive noise fragments - all these can make up different moods in dark ambient.

People who don't get dark ambient music, are found scrolling through the tracks in their desperate attempt of finding "where does at least SOME music start?"

There's also a tendency among some cultist freaks to puke up some really lousy synth pads and moans, put runes or pentagrams and some pseudo-religious texts on an album cover and call it "dark ambient", or "pagan/ritual/black dark ambient", or "neo-satanic nazi anti-nazi superficial industrial death dark ambient". Trust me, you don't wanna listen to that crap.

Live ist Dark Ambient nicht wirklich aufregend, man kann ja nicht danach Tanzen, es springt ja auch keiner mit eine Gitarre über die Bühne, das stellt sich eher so dar, dass da 1, 2 Leute hinter ihren Geräten (gerne mit Laptop) sitzen, hier und da mal ein Knöpfchen drehen. Und im Hintergrund laufen irgendwelche Videos. Meist wird das komplette Set von z.B. 40 Minuten durchgespielt, Applaus gibt es dann am Schluss.

Von allen abseitigen Musikstilen ist es angeblich der abseitigste. Für mich ist es jedenfalls der unkonventionellste und faszinierendste. Sicherlich keine Musik für wilde Feten , aber wenn man mal mehr als 5 Minuten Zeit hat, sich auf was ungewöhnliches einzulassen...

Also ich höre was das anbelangt, mehr nur noch bei betadecaymal rein, reicht mir auch. Was es so sonst noch außerhalb von SC gibt, dazu kann ich nichts sagen.

Mich würde sehr interessieren, wie es den Machern und den Hörern dieser Art von Musik damit geht.

Ich halte mich jedenfalls nicht für depressiv.

Habe gerade wieder einmal angefangen mich durch die Beispiele hier zu hören.
Bin von diesem Genre durchaus fasziniert.
Mein Problem, bzw. meine Befürchtung ist, daß es mir psychisch nicht wirklich gut bekommt.

Wenn man eh schon schlecht drauf ist, kann man aber auch nichts "freudiges" hören, das nervt mich dann alles nur oder macht mich agressiv.

Mich würde sehr interessieren, wie es den Machern und den Hörern dieser Art von Musik damit geht.

Es gibt ja nicht nur den ganz pechschwarzen "Wir-werden-bald-sterben-und-kommen-dann-alle-in-die-Hölle!"-Dark Ambient.
Das Stück oben im Beispiel klingt doch schon mal recht undepressiv, oder?
"A Declaration Of War" oder "The Atomic Age" (beides hervorragende Alben!) höre ich mir freilich lieber bei Tageslicht an als auf nächtlichen Waldspaziergängen. Bin ja nicht mehr der Jüngste.

In meiner eigenen Musik, die wohl auch etwas in dieses Genre schwappt, versuche ich meist, eine Geschichte zu erzählen, die durchaus auch mal darkere und verstörende Elemente enthält, aber im Allgemeinen eher versöhnlich endet.
