This CD was recorded live at Jodrell Bank on June 23rd 2001. Some of you were probably at the show and have long since given up hope of an official release. Well, despair no longer, here it is. As fitting to the setting of the concert we kick off with 'dron (e) field', a very cosmic track. This isn't an easy area of the cosmos though, all deep dark and decidedly spooky; like a scene from the film 'Alien'. A rumbling <a href="https://www.sequencer.de/specials/sequencer.html">Sequencer</a>uence starts up at the beginning of 'ozone'. It has a tremendously powerful feel to it but also with an evil twist. There is a growl to the pulsations and depth that will shake the floor. Another <a href="https://www.sequencer.de/specials/sequencer.html">Sequencer</a>uence joins the first as do fascinating little melodies that at one moment seem quite bright but then morph to a more ominous refrain. Sonic growls add to proceedings almost sounding like distorted laser fire, as if heard from a great distance. Another <a href="https://www.sequencer.de/specials/sequencer.html">Sequencer</a>uence is hurled into the pot fizzing with pent up energy taking things to almost apocalyptic proportions then there is a steady stripping back as a tinkling <a href="https://www.sequencer.de/specials/sequencer.html">Sequencer</a>uence, like a warning beacon, becomes the main feature. The laser fire can still being heard in the distance. What an awesome track- one of the best I have heard from them!

'oughtibridge' returns us to more atmospheric realms but this time things are ethereal and peaceful. Lovely lush sounds are chosen which are easy to immerse yourself in and become wonderfully detached from reality. A very similar feeling persists as we float into 'ascension' but things soon take the spooky path again as wordless spectral female vocal colouring is introduced. As the track progresses the sound becomes increasingly dense and foreboding. 'fibre' sees the return of <a href="https://www.sequencer.de/specials/sequencer.html">Sequencer</a>uences but as before these are dense and floor shaking. Indeed they form more of a looped bass line than a <a href="https://www.sequencer.de/specials/sequencer.html">Sequencer</a>uence as such. A more conventional, tremendously heavy <a href="https://www.sequencer.de/specials/sequencer.html">Sequencer</a>uence spews from the speakers right from the beginning of 'tool'. If played in the hills it could cause an avalanche. If the military get to hear of it, it could well be classed as a lethal weapon! Unbelievably more <a href="https://www.sequencer.de/specials/sequencer.html">Sequencer</a>uences are added. This must surely be the equivalent of Sequencer Death Metal! Another incredible track. 'dune' takes over with a sort of blood bumping throb then transports us back into space. 'lovell' (named after the Radio Telescope at Jodrell Bank) takes us even deeper into the barely charted realms of the cosmos and we once again float in peaceful isolation. Things become even more tranquil, beautiful even on 'stern'. How this album juxtapositions the most glorious floating atmospheric numbers with out and out mayhem is masterful. This is exemplified perfectly with the next track 'spinegrinder'. From the first few seconds we are transported to brooding oozing realms as an ominous reverberating rhythm starts up, joined by first one <a href="https://www.sequencer.de/specials/sequencer.html">Sequencer</a>uence then another; later accompanied by a blistering, growling lead line. I presume that was the end of the main set and that they decided on the CD to just cross fade into the encores as the next track is titled 'you want some more?' It is a short gentle piece for piano and electronics leading into another dose of Sequencer mayhem with the final track 'No Hard Shoulder'. An excellent way to finish.

'Oughtibridge' sees Ramp taking a decidedly darker turn than previously though not as doom laden as their last Limited Edition album 'Doombient One'. It is a superb album - highly recommended. (DL)

Wie zum Henker seid Ihr denn da dran gekommen? Verkauft der die jetzt einzeln da drüben oder wie darf ich das verstehen?

Nee, Steve hat einen größeren Schwung geordert und vertreibt sie über seine Website. Das heißt, wir erreichen auch mal ein Publikum abseits der College Radios in den Staaten, was nicht verkehrt ist.

Ich kenne Steve jetzt seit fast fünfzehn Jahren, ich bin (mit Cosmic Hoffmann) sogar schon zusammen mit ihm auf einem Festival aufgetreten (also, Steve hat nach uns gespielt, nicht wir mit ihm). In der Zwischenzeit ist man sich immer wieder mal in irgendeiner Weise begegnet; er hat mal Freunde von uns produziert (Temps Perdu?), und ich hatte sogar mal für´n BODYSTYLER (wer erinnert sich noch?) eine mehrteilige Serie über Steve und seine Arbeit geschrieben. Lange ist´s her...

Da die Oughtibridge ja doch ein bißchen von seinen Arbeiten (neben Robert Rich und Michael Stearns) beeinflußt ist, dachte ich, ich schicke ihm mal was, so als kleines Dankeschön. Die Freude war dann gegenseitig .

Doom. It’s the New Dark. We’re post-dark now, and German doom duo ['ramp] got with the Doomgeist a few years ago when they coined the term "doombient" for their work, feeling that their music was “no longer simply dark but pitch-black.” What they call “doombient” is “...the sound of fear... the mechanics of fear,” according to an in-depth essay on their website. But this doombient isn’t doom as we know it, not the sludgey drone doom Sunn 0)))) or Khanate or Boris peddle. No, ['ramp]’s doombient is a more refined strain, essentially an unholy union between some of the tropes of the Death Metal aesthetic encountering the sonic signifiers of post-TD/Vangelis/Jarre E-music wave. That’s not to dismiss it, merely to reduce it. A potted history details their founding inspiration as being a Lightwave gig in 1996, as well as like-mind peers such as Redshift and Node, and of course the Berlin School Kosmische Musik legacy, though ['ramp] are more jackdaw eclectic in their appropriation of elements from other sub-genres.

['ramp] is Frank Makowski and Stephen Parsick, both on “electronics, atmospherics, tools, and sequencing,” and their third official album Oughtibridge is first in the pile, recorded live at Jodrell Bank on June 23rd 2001. As befits the setting the concert takes off with the uber-cosmic “Dron(e)field.”The cosmos depicted here is, as you’d expect, deep and dark, but also decidedly angst-ridden. It’s High Anxiety in space. Rumbling sequences propel a number of pieces that invariably turn out to have an edge of Something Wicked This Way Comes; pulsations growl, and wisps of distortion rub up against the ethereal and the lush. And it’s this kind of dynamic of light and shade that is a feature of the recording, as they juxtapose drift-float-wash atmospherics with serious sequencer action. When the alarming density of the music with its pummelling arpeggiation action threatens to become overbearing, crystalline melodies are ushered in to bring respite. Oughtibridge overall is manna from heaven (or more aptly from hell) for those seeking a dark-hued Alien-ized update to their Tangerine Dream collection, or other post-E music casualties suffering cold turkey from Redshift withdrawal.
