early: OS9.22 (latest) newer: OSX 10.4 (Tiger), 10.5 (Leopard, Jan 2007), etc.
began with the nice small MacIntosh model in 1984
- with Motorola 68K family processors
- later with PowerPC 601 and 604 processors in 1994
- changed to Intel with new product line on all models with the Xeon and dual core processors from Intel around 2006
