Opcode (later aquired by Gibson, no longer present these days) initially created the Open Music System for OS 9.22 and below Apple Macintosh Computers for MIDI Communication with MIDI / MIDI Interfaces.

Open Music System by Opcode OMS configuration

english

mac os x is now the perfect audio Operating System! if you buy a new computer : try to avoid going back to os9 it's dead!! really!

the audio stuff is almost like the old OMS system on os9 from opcode.. why? the guy who did the osx midi system is the same who did the opcode OMS system.. it is best to work with the system midi stuff here.. same with audio and audio cards!!

and how to get it to work correctly.. (eg: necessary for using the Nord Modular) the current version is 2.3.8 that should work nicely..(well I had my trouble with it and you will not..!! :-) back

if it doesn work.. check this:

do you have the driver (and installed in the OMS drivers folder) for YOUR interface (especially very important for non Opcode interfaces..) eg. the Unitor8 (emagic..) has its own driver (download it from the emagic site)

then use the auto search (auto detect devices).. now your interface should appear!!

(if you have a nice smart interface that is able to Xmit its data faster (fast mode) use it (eg the unitor8 has the fast mode.. very useful especially for editing (nord mod again!!)

next: did you set all the ports (add device per port) at least every existing port must be there as an icon (generic is ok.. but you can enter your synth & samplers manufacturers and names).. the auto function does not work very well here.. it only regonised my TG77 :-( so you need to set those synth manually..

..the nord modular needs 2 MIDI Ports (one for SysEx another one for Note & controllers..) so in that case it is ok that oms will warn you that it has found the nord on 2 ports (after you manually keyboarded in the Nord for the 2nd port..) of course it has the same device ID.. thats ok..

ok.. now you see your interface and all the ports (in case of the unitor8 you should see 8 ports attached)

now its fine and save it!..

now Logic: yes.. go to the environment and choose the OMS physical stuff after you have switched to oms mode under preferences.. after klicking the OMS (there is only one!!) while in environment.. you now should see all of the instruments that you have set in the setup!!.. most of them are multis (well if you do not own monophonic synth only :-))

and yes: those oms inputs are physically diffenrent from the "normal" logic stuff!!.. also the IAC connection (for software synthesizers!!) are here!!.. don't forget to set the right port in the nord editor also!!.. now it should work!!

fundamental tip on audio stuff..

try not to use up all RAM that is available .. because OS 9.X does not protect the ram properly when it has not too much headroom.. so it crashes more oft.. switch off use 16busses .. it uses lots of RAM!.. assign more memory manually to the program (logic or ??? whatever you use..).. sometimes when you use platforms like pulsar and exs24 (or any softsampler...) you might find out that 320MB of ram is quite "poor" ;-) .. so if in doubt.. and it crashes more often.. try more ram, closing some progs that arent't needed!..

OMS-Konfiguration in Mac OS9
