In audio a Sample is a short digital recording, eg CDs sample 44100 times in one second and each sample will be a numbe that depends on the resolution in bit. a CD is recorded with 16 bit, so it is a value from 0 to 65535, 24 Bit would be a number from 0 to 16.6 million.
