there is a timeline on which you can arrange your FX, that means: the timeline is not like a VST plugin or something, it is more like switching and morphing the FX and programs in arrange them and let the parameters chance over time and "replace the apps" while playing, thats why very complicated synth , audio processing and fx can happen here. | there is a timeline on which you can arrange your FX, that means: the timeline is not like a VST plugin or something, it is more like switching and morphing the FX and programs in arrange them and let the parameters chance over time and "replace the apps" while playing, thats why very complicated synth , audio processing and fx can happen here. |

Symbolic Sound Kyma / Capybara
Capybara : the DSP system .. kmya is a language not the system itself .. it can be compared to smalltalk. basically you can install RAM and DSP cards up to 28 in one (current) capybara

it allows spectral analysis and synthesis, vocoding, morphing, sampling and replaying in relatime, of course there are modules like filters, OSCs, formant filters and vocoders, sequencers and effects like delay, reverb etc. there is a timeline on which you can arrange your FX, that means: the timeline is not like a VST plugin or something, it is more like switching and morphing the FX and programs in arrange them and let the parameters chance over time and "replace the apps" while playing, thats why very complicated synth , audio processing and fx can happen here. granualar synthesis is no problem as well as FM, stuttering FX and others.. one thing is clear: this is the machine, autechre and aphex twin used when they told us "they bought a very expansive mac.." the expensive one was kyma ;) you can hear some of the technologies on their CD, possibly you can hear the "i am the cephlagage" from kurt or carla scrambled, and jazzy things like squarepusher can re-stutterize and "mash up" FX.. clicks und co ? no problems, sometimes it is enough to have too few DSPs to make it crack and digitally slaughter the sound.. it starts with 32khz and ends above 100khz sampling rate for all dsps.. there are also other chances to need to reduce to less dsp power. imho a good work can be done with 4 DSPs installed.
capybara and the Kyma language startet with Carla Scaletti programming Kyma on a little mac in the 80ies, later Kurt hebel joined and the hardware was added to it.. they are coming from the very experimental "corner" ,so it is not just like another mass FX system or synthesizer, it is something on its own..
it has high quality AD and DA convertors which should work directly with OS X audio core (it's planned) . it also has midi. when you generate a patch it is constructed out of modules just like in NI reaktor 5 but you can write smalltalk-kind of code: kyma!
imo it is perfect for complex jobs, it makes those very easy while "simple" things may be faster done with a clavia g2 or so.. it is compareable to reaktor but it is not even close.. it is just the next one that I could think of.. the audio morph: like the hartmann neuron and the "morph" plug by prosoniq it should analyse the spectral files beforehand to morph in realtime, more on kyma soon.. fact is: it can do things in realtime that other systems still dream of, it was able to realtime and controller & control-surface influence the sound like todays plugins do. some things are still ahead..
it can morph audio in realtime.. and a lot more..
kyma allows the wacom tablet or the haken continuum to operate with it as an alternative controller.
connection
the interface connects kyma to the mac via firewire.. works with os x tiger but also with os 9 etc..
Pb or G5? hey, kyma does not use the editing computer, so you do not need high performance engines.. so a very simple small machine is enough.. but: try to find a big screen ;) it's helpful to have the control panel, the browser and the patch edit and timeline on screen
