The One Laptop Per Child project comes with a nice music application called TamTam. Its sound core is csound, which is developed at the MIT like the OLPC itself so the choice is obvious.
The planned millions of laptops will not only boost the share of Linux but also make csound the most used softwaresynthesizer worldwide.
